5/13/2023 0 Comments Foster Fox by William D. Writer![]() ![]() Many Black Soldiers fought in the Battle of New Orleans. As Henry Laurens of South Carolina stated, “ one of those who dare trust in Providence for defense and security of their own liberty while they enslave and wish to continue in slavery thousands who are as well entitled to freedom as themselves.” A monument to the regiment’s courage was erected in Portsmouth, R.I. Some Americans realized the irony of enslaved Black people fighting under the banner of the Declaration of Independence. Unlike their white counterparts, these Black Soldiers did not receive any compensation for their service after the war. 14, 1781, they took part in the assault and capture of Redoubt 10. They successfully held their line for four hours against British-Hessian assaults, enabling the entire American Army to escape a trap. 29, 1778, they fought in the battle of Rhode Island on Aquidneck Island. ![]() In July 1778, the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, the first all-Black military unit in America, was assembled into service under the command of white officers. ![]()

5/13/2023 0 Comments David henry hwang's m butterfly![]() ![]() The Indochina War ended in 1954, and in 1960, when the action of the play begins, American military forces are preparing to send thousands of troops into Vietnam and seize control of the country in France’s place - this invasion is an early initiative in what Americans will come to know as the Vietnam War. Other Western nations, including the United States, refused to intervene to help France hold onto their colonies, and so the war was lost. The Vietnamese forces that led the resistance against France were aided by the Communist government in neighboring China, who supplied modern weapons from the Soviet Union that helped the Vietnamese to match and eventually defeat what might otherwise have been overwhelming French forces. Butterfly, which begins in 1960, take place shortly after the Indochina War, in which France fought unsuccessfully to maintain control of its colonies in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. ![]() The frequent references to “the Revolution” that characters like Song make throughout the play refer to that period of political upheaval. In 1949, a civil war between the Chinese Communist Party and the Nationalist Party, also known as Kuomintang, led to the installation of a Communist government led by Chairman Mao Zedong. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments Without remorse book![]() ![]() Kelly is gravely wounded by a shotgun blast, while Pam is recaptured and later tortured, gang-raped, and killed. Set during the Vietnam War, it serves as an origin story of John Clark, one of the recurring characters in the Ryanverse. Without Remorse is a thriller novel, written by Tom Clancy and published on August 11, 1993. ![]() ![]() ![]() In the final years of his life, he expanded his focus to include poverty and the Vietnam War. He worked tirelessly to assure the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and was in attendance when President Johnson signed both that Act and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law. In 1965, King helped to organize the Selma to Montgomery marches. In 1963, he was one of the organizers for the March on Washington and the following year he received the Nobel Peace Prize. Ultimately, King was arrested 30 times for his participation in civil rights activities. ![]() ![]() The brutality displayed towards the Campaign's demonstrators and King's " Letter from a Birmingham Jail", written while he was incarcerated, brought national and international attention to the civil rights movement. His leadership and eloquence made him one of the most effective and respected civil right leaders of the American history. King, along with Fred Shuttleworth and others led the Birmingham Campaign to desegregate Birmingham, Alabama. The "Montgomery Movement" led to the integration of the city's buses and launched a non-violent protest movement that spread across the United States. Following Rosa Parks' arrest in 1955 for refusing to move to the back of a bus in Montgomery, he organized a year-long bus boycott. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s not just that no subsequent single-volume history has penetrated the national psyche the way Adams’s and Zinn’s did it’s also that, textbooks aside, few major US historians have attempted the feat. Indeed, after Zinn the once-crowded field grew bare. Seeing the country as divided between oppressors and oppressed, he made little room for common cause, for shared dreams, for even a common history. ![]() Yet Zinn’s book, perhaps the most successful single-volume history of the United States, also drove a stake through the heart of the enterprise. Stanford University’s Sam Wineburg, an expert on history education, says that it “has arguably had a greater influence on how Americans understand their past than any other single book.” Though decades old, A People’s History still cracks Amazon’s list of the 50 best-selling history titles. Like The Catcher in the Rye, it’s a they’re-all-phonies book that, despite itself, now appears regularly on high school syllabi. Zinn sought to provide a defiant riposte to the traditional flag-and-freedom histories, but his book has entered the canon. ![]() 5/12/2023 0 Comments The Old Neighborhood by Ray Suarez![]() ![]() They talked to other reporters who had covered the story. They didn’t talk to any of the principals involved in the story. “I watched an hour of one of the 24-hour news networks this morning,” he said. As host of an episode of Talk of the Nation that aired as part of the Hispanic Journalists Convention of June 1998, Suarez lamented the insularity of many commercial news outlets. When trends in commercial news began to conflict with his journalistic ideals, he opted for a job in public broadcasting. In 1986, Suarez took a job at Chicago’s WMAQ-TV, where he spent seven years covering local, national, and international stories. ![]() Too soon, he realized that American news organizations “just didn’t care” about having a correspondent in Africa, which thwarted his plans and prompted him to come up with a plan B. In 1985, immediately after graduating from New York University with a bachelor’s degree in African history, Suarez was living his dream, traveling and reporting from around the continent. He planned a career around this buried treasure, as a journalist reporting from Africa. ![]() But the sack of coins, tucked away in his father’s closet, gave the young Suarez his first glimpse of life outside of Brooklyn. Ray Suarez’s father probably didn’t anticipate that the collection of foreign coins he accumulated while in the Navy would inspire a remarkable journalistic career. ![]() 5/12/2023 0 Comments Odd thomas by dean koontz![]() ![]() And Odd is far from sure he can stop the coming storm. In that book I talked about how poor black people migrated from the Deep South to Southern California, of how they flourished and ultimately failed only to rise again, flourish again, fail again but in the end, pressing the envelope of that contest forward each and every time.
